Best Colors to Wear for Beach Photos: A Guide from Your Cabo Photographers
Choosing your best colors to wear for beach photos impacts the look and feel of your photo, maybe more than anything else. Your outfit can take a dreary day and make it pop, or take the sparkle out of a golden hour.
If you’re asking yourself, “What colors should I wear to my beach photoshoot?” well done! Seriously, you’re a giant step ahead of most.
Choosing your outfit colors can completely change the mood and look of your photos, maybe more than anything else. The colors you wear can bring out the best in your surroundings, or clash with them. They can take a dreary day and make it pop, or a golden hour and dampen the mood.
Here at Cabo Family Photos, our photography style leans toward a watercolor, pastel, dreamy aesthetic:
Airy neutrals, playful turquoise, sunset pinks, and warm golden tones.
These colors don’t just look pretty — they work with Cabo’s natural light to create images that feel romantic, joyful, and maybe even a little whimsical.
Let’s break down how to choose your perfect beach photo palette.
1. Choose Your Beach Color Schemes
One of my favorite tips is to look at what the beach is already giving you.
The soft, beige sand
The aqua-to-deep-blue water
The dreamsicle peachy-pink tones at sunset
If Cabo San Lucas is the canvas, these colors are the paint. And your outfits should complement that, not compete.
For example:
A pale blush dress looks dreamy against the cool blues of the ocean.
A soft sage green shirt picks up the tones of beach grasses or palm trees.
Cream, ivory, and warm beige blend beautifully without washing you out (especially if you’ve been catching sun).
The key to timeless photos are colors that feel like they belong in their natural surroundings.
2. Choose Light, Muted Tones Over Bright, Saturated Ones
Our editing style leans dreamy and watercolor. Don’t get me wrong—we can punch up the bold and bright when needed, and we love a dramatic golden hour. But if you want something that will feel timeless, try:
Soft blues (powder blue, dusty blue, teal)
Muted pinks (blush, dusty rose)
Warm neutrals (sand, cream, champagne, oatmeal)
Pastel greens (sage, eucalyptus)
You see how these colors look amazing against the beach, whether in the middle of the day or at sunset? These tones create that watercolor feel we love. They also reflect light beautifully, which helps skin tones look natural and flattering.
(And while we’re on the subject of skin tone, we’ve had so many clients forget to re-apply sunscreen during their vacation and come to the shoot stressed a sunburn might ruin the photo op. Please don’t worry! We completely understand and have an edit for that. 😉)
3. Coordinate, Don’t Match
If you’re taking family or couple photos, try this: pick two or three main colors for everyone to pull from. This avoids the “matching T-shirt” look while keeping your group visually connected.
Example Cabo beach palette:
Dusty blue
Warm beige
White or ivory
And when incorporating prints or patterns, the rule of thumb is to use no more than one pattern for every two solids.
That means if one person wears a pattern, no one else in the group should wear a pattern unless two others are wearing solid colors. This isn’t an exact formula, but people seem to love photos with that type of mix.
Here’s how that might look:
Mom in a flowy dusty blue maxi dress (Example: Old Navy)
Dad in a white linen button-up with khaki pants (Example: J. Crew)
Daughter in a blush cotton or gauze romper with a beige sunhat (Example: J. Crew, Target)
Son in a light blue short-sleeve shirt and tan shorts (Example: Old Navy)
The colors tie together without feeling forced, and the mix of textures adds depth to the photos.
4. The Magic of White and Ivory
If you really want the Cabo backdrop to pop, well, white and ivory are iconic beach photo colors for a reason. They feel light, airy, classic. In Cabo’s golden light, white reflects the sun and makes your skin glow.
The key is to mix your whites:
Pair a crisp white shirt with soft ivory linen pants.
Combine a lacy white dress with a champagne cardigan.
Layering keeps the look from feeling flat and makes the whites photograph more like warm highlights than stark pops.
5. Think About Movement
Color is important, but so is texture and flow. The beach is breezy — and we want to use that to our advantage.
A pale peach chiffon dress catching the wind will create a soft blur of color in your photos. Linen pants in warm sand tones ripple just slightly with the ocean breeze.
This movement adds life and softness to your images, making the colors feel even more dynamic.
6. Avoid These Color Pitfalls
Listen, your personal style matters above anything I say here. But there are a few colors I recommend skipping for beach photos:
Pure black – A heavy black will compete with Cabo’s bright, light feel. Black also loses detail in bright sunlight.
Navy or royal blue – Often blends into shadows and loses depth against the blue ocean.
Bright red – Can reflect onto skin, creating unwanted color casts.
If you love a bold color, try incorporating it in a subtle accessory (like a scarf or earrings) rather than as your main outfit. Which brings me to…
7. Accessorize in Complementary Colors
Your accessories can tie your whole look together:
Straw hats and woven bags add texture and neutral tones.
Bright or bold sunglasses can make for a fun burst of photos.
Soft pastel hair ribbons or wraps add a romantic touch.
Gold jewelry warms up cooler tones and glows in sunset light.
Treat your accessories as little exclamation points to your color story!
8. How Color Impacts the Mood of Your Photos
Color isn’t just about coordinating with the background — it shapes how your photos feel. For example:
Light blues + whites → Serene, calming, and classic
Peach + blush → Romantic, soft, and feminine
Sage + beige → Earthy, natural, and warm
Champagne + dusty rose → Elegant and timeless
This might sound cheesy, but as Cabo San Lucas photographers, we truly think about your colors as part of your overall story. The shades you wear help us tell it.
9. Bringing It All Together
If you remember nothing else, remember this: choose colors that work with the beach, not against it.
The best colors to wear for beach photos are those that:
Complement Cabo’s sand, sea, and sky
Are light, muted, and timeless
Coordinate without being matchy-matchy
You feel comfortable in
Whether it’s a sunrise maternity shoot, a sunset family session, or a romantic anniversary stroll along the water, your outfit colors set the tone for how your photos will feel decades from now.

Have You Found The Cabo San Lucas Photographer For You, Yet?
What if the photoshoot could be just as much fun as the rest of your vacation? Now it can! Whether you’re here with family, friends, or your significant other, let’s create new memories and mementos.
Have you been searching online and scouring Facebook groups for a Cabo San Lucas photographer?
Do you want someone who will deliver beautiful images and a stress-free experience?
What if the photoshoot could be just as much fun as every other part of your vacation?
Here at Cabo Family Photos, we specialize in just that: stunning photography that captures joy and connection. Whether you’re here with family, friends, or your significant other, we can turn your memories into mementos. Here’s how:
What Sets Cabo Family Photos Apart?
Let’s be honest—there are a lot of people claiming the title of Cabo San Lucas photographer. Some have a decent camera, a pretty Instagram and maybe even the skills of a salesman.
But when you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip with your favorite people, you shouldn’t settle for “decent.” You want someone who knows what they’re doing and makes the entire process effortless.
Here’s what makes Cabo Family Photos different:
1. This Isn’t Our First Rodeo—It’s Our Decades-long Passion
We’re not just travelers with a camera or someone who picked up photography as a side hustle. Naomi has been running Nashville Family Photos for over 15 years and eventually set a goal to expand to Cabo. And so, she did!
Enrique trained in Naomi’s style for family photography, and probably even has more technical skill with the camera than she does…
We’ve done hundreds of sessions with every kind of group dynamic you can imagine: the big loud families, the toddlers in meltdown mode, the parents who didn’t want to book photos but now can’t stop staring at them.
That kind of experience matters. It’s how we know exactly what time the light hits just right, how to pose you so it doesn’t feel awkward, and how to keep things moving if your kid suddenly decides they hate sand.
2. We Walk You Through Everything (And Make Sure You Don’t Get Lost!)
Many photographers will send you a date and a beach name and hope for the best. That’s not how we roll—we know how important clear communication is.
From the minute you book with us, we walk you through every step, like:
Choosing the right location. Not all beaches have public access, and not every resort allows visitors. We’ll choose a location convenient to you that accommodate your group and your vibe!
Coordinating the schedule. Some beaches get golden hour at sunrise, while others get it at sunset. We know when and where the light will be perfect, so your valuable time won’t be rushed or wasted.
Detailed directions (if the photoshoot takes place off-resort). We’ll send you a Google Maps dropped pin to a well-populated meetup point, so you don’t get lost.
Step-by-step posing. The number-one question we hear—believe it or not—is, “What should I do with my hands?” It’s a smart question, because subtle details like hand placement make a huge difference in the finished product. We’ll prompt and guide you through countless poses—whether tried-and-true or trending—that aren’t stiff or cheesy, and we’re totally open to recreating something you love from Pinterest, too.
We can also help you choose what to wear (if you want), give you tips for preparing your kids, and even give recommendations for our favorite things to do in Cabo.
3. Professional Editing—Not Just Filters
We don’t just snap and dump. Every image we deliver is professionally edited for color, clarity, and quality—we’re talking print-worthy, frame-worthy, drool-worthy photos you’ll come back to for years. Plenty of newer photographers will hand over unedited files or apply one flat filter across the board. That’s not our style.
You’ll get a gallery that feels vibrant and polished but still true to your family and the moment. Truly timeless photos you’ll still love ten years from now.
4. A Fun, Stress-Free Experience (Even for the Grumpy Ones)
Our sessions feel more like a walk on the beach with a new friend who happens to be taking great photos of you. Seriously, get to know more about Enrique—you will love him.
We know how to bring out real smiles (yes, even from the teen who insists on wearing sunglasses the whole time), and we don’t force stiff poses that make everyone look like they’re auditioning for a stock photo site.
We’ve got tricks for squirmy toddlers, ways to make camera-shy adults relax, and enough comedic timing to get at least one real laugh out of your whole group.
And if someone in your crew is dreading the idea of a photoshoot? Don’t worry. We hear “that was actually really fun” at the end of almost every session.
5. Clear, Simple Pricing—With No Surprise Upsells
We don’t believe in holding your images hostage. You won’t book a session for one price, then get hit with a “pay-per-download” fee later. Our packages are all-inclusive—so depending on what you book, you’ll get 20+ or more edited, high-res images with full lifetime download access so you can print or share them however you like.
No upsells. No regulations. Just great photos, delivered on time, with no funny business.
So, what are you waiting for? Our sessions book up fast, so send us a message today and capture the magic of your trip forever!
Cabo vs Cancun: Which Mexican Vacation is Right for You?
Cabo and Cancun both have unique vibes, geography, experiences. I’ve had the chance to explore both places—camera in hand and kid in tow. I’ll break down the differences honestly so you can decide which Mexican hotspot fits your travel style.
If you're torn between Cabo vs Cancun for your next vacation, you're not alone. Both destinations offer sunny beaches, luxurious resorts, and unforgettable experiences—but the vibe, geography, and overall travel experience are actually quite different!
I’ve had the chance to explore both places—camera in hand and kid in tow. And while I may be biased (Cabo obviously has my heart), I’ll break down the differences honestly so you can decide which Mexican hotspot fits your travel style.
Whether you're planning a relaxing family getaway, a romantic escape, or a spring break adventure, here’s what you need to know before booking a plane ticket.
1. Location, Flights, and Travel Time
The beach at Sandos Finisterra in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Cabo San Lucas, located on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, is often easier to reach from the western U.S. cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, or Phoenix. Most direct flights to Cabo are under three hours from the West Coast.
Cancun, on the other hand, sits on the Yucatán Peninsula and is a better fit if you're flying from the East Coast or Midwest (hey Chicago and New York!). Flights from the West Coast are longer and often pricier.
✈️ TL;DR: West Coast? Cabo. East Coast? Cancun. Midwest? Cancun.
2. The Vibe: Laid-Back vs Lively
If you're craving an energetic, nightlife-heavy atmosphere with a spring break mentality, Cancun barely wins. The Hotel Zone is known for clubs, resorts stacked side by side, and a younger crowd.
Cabo, in contrast, offers a chill, upscale vibe. Think boutique hotels, dramatic desert-meets-ocean landscapes, and classy margaritas at sunset.
Don’t get me wrong—Cabo does know how to party. The beachfront and marina are lined with bars, and San José del Cabo is known for its rooftop lounges. There’s no shortage of alcohol and ambiance—just fewer crowds that skew older.
📸 Pro Tip: The relaxed energy in Cabo makes it easier to capture candid family photos, romantic sunset shoots, or spontaneous moments with kids running barefoot along the shoreline.
3. Beach Conditions
Surfers near Lover’s Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Here’s the biggest surprise in the Cabo vs Cancun debate: not all beaches are swimmable.
Cancun has calm, turquoise Caribbean waters and powdery white sand—great for swimming and floating all day. It’s postcard-perfect but can get very crowded.
Cabo has a mix. Some beaches are wild with powerful Pacific waves and steep drop-offs (not ideal for young kids… in fact, some beaches are not swimmable), but others—like Medano Beach, Chileno Bay, or Palmilla—are calm, swimmable, and stunning.
🌊 Pro Tip: Want breathtaking photos without being photobombed by strangers? Cabo has more remote beaches and with rocky, hidden coves for dreamy, crowd-free photo sessions. Message me for the best spot!
4. Adventure and Activities
Our photographer, Enrique, hiking Mt. Solmar in Cabo, Mexico.
Both destinations offer tons of excursions, but the type of adventure varies:
In Cancun, you can:
Explore ancient Mayan ruins (Tulum, Chichen Itza)
Swim in cenotes (natural freshwater sinkholes)
Zipline or ride ATVs through the jungle
Snorkel near Isla Mujeres
In Cabo, you can:
Go whale watching (seasonal, but unreal)
Hike Mount Solmar for panoramic views
Ride camels through the desert
Snorkel at Santa Maria or Chileno Bay
Rent a private boat to explore Land’s End and the iconic El Arco
For my favorite ideas, check out my guide the best things to do in Cabo.
🐋 Fun Fact: Some of my favorite photos we’ve ever taken were while whale watching in Cabo. Seeing a humpback breach next to your boat is unforgettable—and yes, your kids will lose their minds (in a good way).
5. Food and Culture
Brunch at Phenix in Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Cancun leans more touristy, and while you’ll find delicious food, many of the restaurants cater to the all-inclusive crowd.
Cabo’s culinary scene is more diverse and less commercialized. You’ll find:
Fresh seafood at waterfront spots
Farm-to-table dining in San José del Cabo
Casual taco stands with serious flavor
Upscale fusion restaurants that rival L.A. and NYC
🌮 Local Insight: If you want truly authentic Mexican food, Cabo is the winner. (Although, Enrique is originally from Mexico City and he says the food is even better there.) And the variety makes for great photo ops—from colorful markets to bougie cocktails at sunset.
6. Safety and Comfort
Both Cancun and Cabo are generally safe for tourists, especially in the resort areas. However, Cabo often feels more secure due to its smaller size, friendly locals, and less concentrated party scene.
As a mom and a business owner, I’ve never felt unsafe walking around downtown Cabo, even with my camera gear. That’s not always the case in tourist-heavy parts of Cancun.
👮 Mom Note: Cabo is great for families who want relaxation without worry. Plus, it’s easier to find smaller boutique resorts or Airbnbs with more privacy.
7. Cost Comparison
Cancun can be more affordable, especially if you’re booking an all-inclusive resort. Flights from the East Coast are often cheaper, and the high volume of hotels keeps prices competitive.
Cabo tends to be slightly more expensive, especially when it comes to hotels, dining, and excursions. But it also feels more exclusive and less like a tourist trap.
Before you book, think about how often you want to venture away from your resort or accommodations. If your goal is to stay at the pool all day with a drink in hand, Cancun’s all-inclusives are perfect. But even when I’m at my favorite all-inclusive in Cabo I’m itching to get out on the streets because there’s just so much to see and do in Cabo.
8. Photos and Scenery
Our photographer, Enrique, at one of our “secret” photo spots in Cabo San Lucas.
As a photographer, I notice the difference immediately:
Cancun is flat, with endless beaches and bright blue waters.
Cabo is dramatic, with mountains, cliffs, and sunsets that look straight out of a movie.
If you want vacation photos that don’t look like everyone else's, Cabo wins hands down.
Whether we’re photographing families walking through the marina, couples popping champagne on a private boat, or kids giggling in the tide—Cabo gives more variety, more depth, and more wow.
📷 Need a photographer while you're here? We’d love to help capture your time in Cabo. Whether it’s a multi-generational family trip, a sunset cruise, or a candid session on the beach, we’ll make sure you leave with memories as beautiful as the scenery. View our packages here.
Final Verdict: Cabo vs Cancun
Cabo vs Cancun? It Depends On Your Travel Personality.
If you want a tropical vacation with all the bells, whistles, and foam parties, Cancun may be your place.
But if you’re looking for a destination that feels like a real escape—with wild landscapes, vibrant local culture, and photo-worthy views at every turn—then Cabo San Lucas delivers in spades.
And if you do choose Cabo, don’t forget to document your experience! Enrique and I would love to be your photographers while you're here.
The Best Cabo Photo Ops: A Photographer’s Guide to Your Perfect Shots in Paradise
If you’re searching for the best Cabo photo ops, you won’t find another guide quite like this. Skip the tourist traps and head to these local-approved locations. These places aren’t just pretty—they tell a story.
As professional photographers, we spend most of our time chasing light, natural smiles, and unforgettable backdrops. And let me tell you—Cabo San Lucas is a dream for anyone who values a good photo, whether you're capturing vacation memories, proposing at sunset, or just looking for the perfect social media content.
If you’re searching for the best Cabo photo ops, you won’t find another guide quite like this. Skip the tourist traps and head to these local-approved locations. These places aren’t just pretty—they tell a story. Here's where we recommend you go (camera or phone in hand), and why each one makes the cut:
1.Mt. Solmar Hike
Best for: Dramatic landscapes, wide shots, solo adventure portraits, influencers

If you’re willing to work a little for your photo, the Mt. Solmar hike offers one of the best panoramic views in Cabo. (It’s also consistently rated one of the best things to do in Cabo.) From the top, you can see both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean in one breathtaking vista. Plus, the hike itself is pretty short—about 30 minutes up if you’re in decent shape.
Here’s the catch: It’s on private property, so you have to go with the guide (look up “Enrique the dog trainer” in Facebook groups—yes, really!). He usually leads hikes every day at 8am (except Saturday). The meeting point is at the marina, across from the navy base. More information on Facebook.
📸 Photographer tip: Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone’s ultra-wide setting. The best shots are framed with your subject slightly off-center, to show off the epic background.
2. Solmar Beach (adjacent to Divorce/Lover’s Beach)
Best for: Beachy elopements, dramatic ocean shots, family portraits
You can only reach Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach by boat, which makes them feel secluded and special. Lover’s Beach is calm and relaxed. Meanwhile, Divorce Beach has giant waves crashing against rocks and wide, open sands for more dramatic and adventurous vibes—and you can actually walk to a nearly identical beach right next to it. Access Solmar beach on foot near La Roca and Solmar Resort:
A lot of couples book photo sessions here for proposals or maternity shoots. It’s chill, beautiful, convenient and honestly has everything we need for a variety of shots. We never get tired of shooting here.
📸 Photographer tip: Bring water, and be prepared to get a little sandy. The lighting is best mid-morning or just before sunset.
3. The Cabo Marina
Best for: Golden hour reflections, local color, drinks, boats, Pancho the sea lion sightings, last-minute cheap souvenirs, and lifestyle shots.
The Cabo San Lucas Marina is more than a hub for tourists and fishermen—it is begging for your picture to be taken there. ☺️ And y’all—early in the morning or around golden hour, the marina just glows. You’ll see rows of moored boats, pelicans gliding by, and vendors selling affordable souvenirs and margs-to-go.
It’s ideal for candid lifestyle photography, like, “a day in the life of,” or couples walking hand-in-hand by the docks. We often take families here who want authentic vacation shots in classic Cabo.
📸 Photographer tip: Grab a coffee from The Cabo Coffee Company nearby and shoot along the boardwalk for relaxed, editorial-style photos.
4. Tres Sirenas
Best for: Boho-chic portraits, bachelorette parties, drinks with friends, elevated Instagram content.
If you’re looking for something with a little mermaid sparkle, Tres Sirenas is your place. This boutique bar is a dreamy Mediterranean hideaway, and she is full of twinkling lights, sea-inspired accents, rattan chairs, teal everything… and cocktsails to match.
I recommend coming here at sunset, ordering an artisinal drink, and snapping a few effortless glamour shots along the way.
📸 Photographer tip: Let the colorful lights and decor do what they gon’ do and tip a server a bit extra to take your group photo!
5. Playa el Suspiro
Best for: Sunset shoots, influencers, relaxing, golden hour magic, getting away from the tourist traps
We really shouldn’t tell you about this spot, because it’s one of our best kept secrets. Watching the sunset at the very not-touristy Playa el Suspiro feels like standing on the edge of the world—where the sky melts into the sea and everything else fades away. The warm breeze, the crashing waves, and the endless horizon gives us a sense of freedom we’ve never found anywhere else—like anything is possible. This beach doesn’t just stay with you; it changes you. We loved borrowing this breathtaking backdrop for this Moana-inspired photoshoot! It felt like we stepped into a storybook—wild, radiant, and completely untamed.
6. Private Boat Rental
Best for: Sunset photos, proposal shoots, friend group candids, total luxury vibes, birthday celebration
Want to feel like you’re in a movie? Rent a private boat. Seriously—it’s not as expensive or scary as you think. Whether you go boujee or budget-friendly, the views you’ll get from the water are unmatched—especially at sunset. You’ll get up-close shots of El Arco, Lovers Beach, and cliffs glowing in that last light of day.
You don’t need to spend a fortune to make this happen. Here are three smart ways to find a boat:
Search Cabo Facebook groups (like Cabo Expats or Los Cabos Locals)
Use the Rent My Boat app
Walk directly down to the Cabo marina and chat with local captains for the best real-time deals
📸 Photographer tip: Wear light, flowing clothes and try to schedule your rental to include golden hour (typically 6–7 p.m. depending on the season). And contact us to join you and capture all the fun!
7. Puerta Vieja Boutique Hotel
Best for: Romantic couples' photos, food and drinks with a view, weddings, influencers
Puerta Vieja is a hidden gem. This boutique hotel and restaurant sits on a hill just outside of town and boasts one of the most gorgeous views of Cabo’s coastline. It’s especially magical at sunset, when the sky lights up behind the hills and silhouettes the Arch.
The interior design has a charming, hacienda-style aesthetic—colorful tiles, archways, fountains, and lush greenery everywhere. You can dine, drink, and then slip into the courtyard or up to the rooftop for golden-hour portraits that feel like they belong in a movie.
📸 Photographer tip: Book a table near the edge of the balcony and time it for about 45 minutes before sunset. The lighting and background are unmatched!
8. Your Balcony at Sunrise
Best for: Your travel journal, dreamy vacation content before coffee
Hear me out—some of the best Cabo photo ops are right outside your door. If your resort or Airbnb has a balcony with a view, wake up early and watch the sunrise spill across your room. The soft morning light is unbeatable, and there’s something intimate about catching that golden glow while the world is still quiet.
📸 Photographer tip: Use sheer curtains or stand by the sliding door for diffused light. Capture “getting ready” moments or your first coffee cup of the day for cozy, storytelling images.
Final Thoughts
Cabo is packed with photo-worthy moments—from wild desert hikes to quiet luxury corners and beachy sunsets. Whether you're planning a photoshoot, eloping in paradise, or just want to step up your Instagram game, these best Cabo photo ops offer more than just pretty backgrounds. They give you a piece of the Cabo story to take home with you.
If you’re here and thinking, “I wish someone could just take the pictures for me…”—you’re in luck. We offer golden hour mini sessions for just $100. Let us handle the angles, the light, and the editing—you just show up to one of these best photo spots in Cabo ready to look breathtaking!

Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas: Hidden Gems + Must-Sees
If you're planning a trip and googling “things to do in Cabo,” let us save you some time. Here’s what we recommend not just as local photographers, but as people who appreciate beauty and authentic experiences.
As a photographer who recently expanded the business to Cabo, I’ve spent a lot of time chasing golden hour across beaches, back streets, and boats. And while that’s technically for work—capturing beautiful families, couples, and influencers—I’ve fallen totally in love with this place.
Oh, and if I’m being honest… my partner Enrique, who is a true local, introduced me to the actual best spots.
If you're planning a trip and googling “things to do in Cabo,” let me save you some time. Here’s what I recommend not just as a local photographer, but as someone who appreciates beauty, authentic experiences, and getting off the typical tourist conveyor belt.
1. Rent a Private Boat (It’s Easier Than You Think)
Everyone talks about Cabo’s gorgeous coastline—and it lives up to the hype. But you don’t need to shell out thousands for a fancy yacht charter. One of the best things to do in Cabo is rent your own private boat, and there are a few ways to do it on a budget:
Join Cabo Facebook groups like “Cabo Friends” and search for boat rentals, or post that you’re looking. Plenty of boat owners advertise directly there.
Use the “Rent My Boat” app, where locals list boats at better rates than big tour companies.
Or… be bold! Walk down to the Cabo marina and ask around. Many boat owners are happy to make you a deal on the spot if you’re flexible.
Nothing beats sailing past the Arch with a cold drink in hand while the sun melts into the Pacific. (Bonus: it’s one of our favorite spots to take photos if you want to book a session with us. 😉)
2. Eat Like a (True) Local
Cabo has no shortage of beachfront restaurants and all-inclusive menus, but if you want to experience Cabo the way locals do, skip the tourist traps and go to the side streets.
Start with taco stands—I’m talking plastic chairs, bottled Coke, and meat grilling right out in the open. These hidden gems have the best al pastor and carne seafood tacos you’ll ever taste. Don’t be afraid to follow the locals; if there’s a line, it’s probably worth the wait. Taqueria El Castor (pictured above) isn’t far from the main strip and has the best Enrique-approved tacos in town.
One of my favorite sit-down spots is Pezcabo, tucked away from the marina crowds. It’s got incredible ceviche, fresh seafood, and that cozy local vibe you won’t find in chain restaurants. It’s where I go when I want to feel like I live here, not just visit. Bring some cash to tip the mariachi band that comes through!
3. Take a Guided Hike to Cabo’s Highest Point

This two-hour hike up Mt. Solmar will be one of the most memorable things you do in Cabo—and it’s free! Not to be confused with our photographer Enrique, your guide Enrique Perron will show you am incredible perspective of Cabo you can only get with some serious height. His wise and witty banter will keep you entertained as he teaches the rich and mystical history of Mt. Solmar and the people who lived there. It’s not overly strenuous—but you’ll want to make sure you have good balance and wear the right shoes—and you’ll likely be accompanied by Enrique’s friendly rescue dogs! The hike draws tourists and locals alike by word of mouth, and you can join any day at 8am (except Saturday). The meeting point is at the marina, across from the navy base (SECTOR NAVAL). More information on Facebook.
4. Enjoy Cocktails at Tres Sirenas
There are plenty of places to grab a margarita in Cabo—but if you want to feel like you’ve wandered into a dazzling Mediterranean dream, wander right in to Tres Sirenas. It’s a little bit mermaid, a little bit upscale cantina, and all-around stunning. The cocktails are handcrafted, the vibe is chill, and the atmosphere makes it one of my favorite stops after a shoot. It’s pure magic and every female in your group will thank you.
Pro tip: if you're looking for cute vacation content, this is the spot. It’s seriously one of the best cabo photo ops.
5. Book a Sunset Cruise
Cabo really shows off at sunset—and I don’t say that lightly as someone who builds her business around beautiful light. One of the most unforgettable things to do in Cabo is to hop on a sunset cruise.
There are plenty of options, from family-friendly catamarans to romantic, adults-only booze cruises. The view as the sun dips below the horizon, with the Arch in silhouette and the sky exploding in color, is something you don’t forget. Bring a light jacket, a good camera (or just your phone), and someone you love watching sunsets with.
6. Visit The Arch (El Arco)
It’s iconic for a reason. El Arco—also known as Land’s End—is the natural stone arch you’ve probably seen on every Cabo postcard. But seeing it in person hits different.
You can reach it by kayak, paddleboard, water taxi, or boat tour. If you’re feeling adventurous, try to visit early in the morning when the light is soft and the crowds haven’t arrived. As a photographer, I can’t overstate how cool this spot is—whether you're snapping a selfie or letting me handle the lens.
7. Whale Watching (Seasonal, But Worth It)
If you're visiting Cabo between mid-December and April, consider yourself lucky—you're in prime whale-watching season. Humpback and gray whales migrate through the waters just off the coast, and it’s one of the most awe-inspiring sights we've witnessed.
There are many of whale-watching tours available (some of which double as snorkeling trips), but a smaller boat will usually get you closer. Seeing a whale breach against the backdrop of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains is nothing short of breathtaking. You might even see a mama and her baby like we did!
Bring a zoom lens if you’re a photo nerd like me—or just keep your eyes on the water and your jaw ready to drop.
8. Book a Vacation Photo Session 📸

Brand Photography: How to Build Trust and Connect with Your Audience
The right brand photography can help you connect with customers’ emotions and values, and help you stand out in the marketplace.
You know how a confident handshake creates a good first impression when you meet someone in person?
Strategic, well-curated photos can have the same effect for your brand.
Brand photography plays a fundamental role in creating a brand's personality. It can help you build trust with customers and stand out in the marketplace.
I’ve been helping real estate agents, musicians, entrepreneurs, podcast hosts, local shop owners and more strengthen their businesses through the right images for over a decade, and I’ve seen what works—and what doesn’t.
Here’s how to use brand photography to connect with your potential customers’ emotions and values…
What Is Brand Photography?
Brand photography is a collection of images showcasing your company’s unique personality and what you do. Every photo you use in your marketing—including headshots, product images, social media shots, and website visuals—are part of your brand photography.
How Important Is Brand Photography?
According to a survey of over 1,000 U.S. consumers, 78% of consumers are more willing to buy from a brand and 77% will choose a brand over a competitor after a positive experience with a brand on social media.1
And what do consumers see on a business’ social media page? Photos!
Of course, they will (hopefully) also see clever captions, compelling stories, and friendly copy, but the images create the first impression—causing a visitor to stay and hang out a while… or bounce.
Whether the pictures end up on your Instagram account, website, or in other marketing materials, brand photography is a great way to attract your dream customers. Use brand photography strategically to communicate that you are:
· laid back and casual, or poised and polished
· polished and poised, or free-spirited
· modern and trendy, or traditional and established
· high-end and exclusive, or for the everyday person
· quiet and clever, or loud and hilarious
Humans are visual creatures, and photos of you and your business really do communicate so much about you, without having to say a thing.
Find a Brand Photographer
When you’re seeking out a brand photographer, you want to look for someone who understands high quality, clear, and consistent branding. Your images should reflect the colors, tone, and feel of your business as a whole.
You want a photographer who:
· understands sizing and spacing requirements for websites (i.e. how much bokeh—or space in a photo that is out of focus—you will need to overlay copy)
· will be hyper-focused on the details surrounding you, the subject, and the background
· understands the basics of SEO (search engine optimization) when exporting and titling your image files
· offers some retouching for blemishes, flyaway hairs, etc. as looking your best in these photos is important
· helps you look and feel your best
Types of Brand Photography You Need for Your Business
As I mentioned, your brand photography should include a variety of different types of photos. There will be headshots you use with your bio or “About” page. Lifestyle images perform well on social media. Product images are a must if you are a product-based business, ideally showcasing your product from several angles, in use, and in different settings. And then there are fun shoots for one-offs like your client Christmas card or email.
Here are some examples of ways I have approached branding photography for three unique businesses:
The real estate business is booming in Nashville, so I get to help a lot of real estate agents with their photography needs. In this example, Lisa needed updated headshots. But she didn’t just want the traditional, “this is what my face looks like” thing. She wanted something with a lifestyle vibe that truly showcased her fun, outgoing personality. She wanted photographs that showed potential clients that she’s fun, approachable, and easy to work with. Fun fact: we staged my home office with some of her accessories for this shoot!
My next example is a powerhouse pair of real estate agents who have a Selling-Sunset-meets-Southern-charm vibe. They are in the top 1% of agents in Nashville’s and wanted to showcase their knowledge, chemistry, and work ethic from atop Music City’s skyline.
For my final example, I work regularly with a local therapist and her team. Our shots focus on each therapists’ individual personality. This can help their potential clients start to get a feel for which therapist might be the best fit. We also shoot lifestyle-type images of all the women interacting together in the bright, happy setting of their office. Who wouldn't want to open up to these ladies?
Get Strategic With Brand Photography
Don’t trust your brand photography to just anyone. With over a decade of experience in branding and marketing, I truly understand the thought and vision that goes into building a brand. You deserve to work with a professional who will approach the shoot with your unique personality, objectives, and product or service in mind. And to simply have fun—because at the end of the day, that’s what building a brand should be.
How to Throw a Moana Themed Birthday Party
Here’s how we threw a Moana-themed birthday party as magical as the heart of Te Fiti! These party supplies and inspiration are all you need.
Ellie’s Moana-themed birthday party was as magical as the heart of Te Fiti.
We Know The Way. . . to a Moana Party
Full disclosure: I did not take (most of) the photos in this blog. That credit goes to the truly incredible Laura K. Allen Photography. There’s just something about my only baby turning two that felt like an even bigger milestone than one. . . is that just me? Like, she finally had an actual personality! (Ellie, not Laura. Laura always has personality.) So I wanted to live in the moment and have my beautiful friend capture it all.

10 Things You Need For a Moana Birthday Party
I’m not sponsored by any of our vendors, but some details of Ellie’s Moana birthday party included:
Invitation: Bloomberry Designs
Hawaiian leis at the entrance for guests
Strawberry and pineapple fruit tray from Publix
Party punch recipe from Laura’s Crafty Life in a drink dispenser from Crate & Barrel
Tropical tiki hut bar topper from Oriental Trading
Balloon arch kit from Amazon
Cake: my talented friend Ashley (everyone should have a friend like her who bakes and is also a perfectionist/wizardress)
Cookies: Cookies: Treats Styled By VIS
Moana cardboard standup: Amazon
Candles: Quick Candles
Cookies: Treats Styled By VIS
Drink Dispenser: Crate & Barrel

Dress: Janie & Jack
Oh, and then: a fire truck showed up! I mean, we knew the party was hot but this wasn’t planned. Our neighborhood cul-de-sac turned into a water park thanks to the local firefighters and I’m pretty sure Ellie had the time of her two-year-old life. Not sure how we’ll top that this year but we’ll try!
A Decade of Families by a Cabo Portrait Photographer
We’re in a new decade and I’ve been looking back at the pictures from the last several years. It makes me so happy to see pictures of the same families from different times in their lives.
One of the most fulfilling things for me as a photographer is when families reach out for updated photos year after year. Now that we’re in a new decade, I’ve been looking back at the pictures from the last several years, and it makes me so happy to see pictures of the same families from different times in their lives. Here are some of the beautiful people who have so kindly invited me to capture their memories time and time again.
Kahla, Justin, then Hazel, and then. . . Milo.
Kelcey, Josh, Nova, and then. . . Indy.
Another thing that’s changed over the years are my photography skills. My lens is newer and nicer, my style is brighter and more polished, and I’m a more confident photographer.
Sarah, Louis, Madison, Will, and Luke.
Ann-Marie, Leo, Lucas, and then. . . Caio.
Katie, Robert, Will, and Max.
To the families who’ve had me back year after year, thank you for growing with me. To the families I’ve worked with just once, thank you for allowing me to do what I love in both Cabo and the U.S. To the families I haven’t met yet: Hi! Let’s take some really cute photos you’ll love for the next decade and beyond.

5 Ways to Take Better Pictures of Your Kids
This post was inspired by my some of my mom girlfriends, who asked for some simple tips on how to take better pictures of their kids. Here’s how to take photos you want to display instead of delete!
This blog was inspired by my some of my mom girlfriends, who asked for some simple tips on how to take better pictures of their kids. They don’t have fancy cameras or lighting kits—they just have iPhones. The great thing about photography in 2019 is that’s all you need!
So today we’re going to cover how to take better pictures of your kids:
Look for the light.
Get on their level.
Get close up.
Show them your face.
Love the silly photos.
Side note: You can apply some of these to taking pictures of more than just children. I have just found them especially essential to capturing photos of my daughter that I want to display instead of delete.
How to Take Better Pictures of Your Kids
If you have a smart phone, there’s nothing between you and frame-worthy pictures of your kids except a few simple techniques. While nothing can replace professional photographs of the whole family, you don’t have to settle for dark, boring or awkward pictures of everyday life.
1. Look for the light.
If you want to take your photos from “meh” to “man, that’s a great pic!” my best piece of advice is this: Make. Them. Brighter.
And just between you and me, this is one of the biggest reasons I even have a business—although most people probably don’t know that’s why they’re hiring me. You may not realize it, but when you see a great photo, lighting is one of the biggest factors.
While most of my examples in this blog were taken on my phone of my baby, this little beauty is not my daughter, and this photo was taken on a Canon DSLR.
Professional photographers know how to use light to our advantage. Here’s how you can harness the power of light to take better pictures:
· Natural lighting will always look better than the flash. Try to take your pictures in a room with lots of windows. You can even open a door to let in more light.
· Avoid “ugly light,” such as midday sunlight or any light that is directly overhead and creates shadows on the face. That kind of harsh lighting doesn’t look good on anyone. This can be a challenge if you’re trying to take pictures of the kids playing outside, but if the sun is especially bright, try to get them in the shade of a building or tree. That way, the light on their faces will be even and your images will turn out much nicer.
Harsh, midday sunlight creates unflattering shadows.
Outdoor photos in the shade create a beautiful, even skin tone.
· On your smart phone, tap the face of your child to adjust exposure. On an iPhone, you can even hold your finger down on their face to pull up the vertical exposure bar and drag it up to make the scene brighter.
2. Get on their level.
If you typically take pictures of your kids standing tall above them, this one tip will make you love your photos so much more. (This will also set your pictures apart from every other mom’s!)
To get on their level, you want to crouch, sit, or even lay all the way down on the floor. Seeing a child from that angle is precious and makes for a much better picture.
3. Get close up.
Don’t be afraid to get the camera really close to your child. Getting close-ups will tune out background “noise” and truly make your child the focal point of the picture. Try some shots where your goal is to have their face and eyes fill up most of the screen.
There is nothing wrong with this photo, but the one on the right is better.
Getting close up will tune out the background noise. This was shot using Portrait Mode on an iPhone XS.
4. Show them your face.
I learned early on with my baby that when I hold my camera or phone up to take her picture, the smile leaves her face. That’s because, to her, it looks like I just disappeared!
Babies rely so much on eye contact, so be sure to peak out from around your phone or camera frequently with a big smile. This will assure them you haven’t abandoned them.
Bonus tip: the younger they are when you start warming them up to the camera, the easier it becomes. Starting well before she was a year old, my daughter would smile instinctively even if I was just sending a text message. The mere sight of the back of my phone triggered a proud pose! Now, you can judge for yourself whether or not that’s a great thing for her to learn so young . . . but it does make taking pictures a lot easier.
My daughter is a little ham. When she sees a camera now, she naturally smiles!
Believe it or not, she posed this way with zero prompting.
5. Love the silly photos.
One of the things I see parents get stressed out about is when their little ones aren’t posing just perfectly for the picture. And I’ve been there, I get it! We all just want a Pinterest-worthy shot for a cute gallery wall.
But think about which photographs of Little You that you enjoy the most. Is it the one where you and your brother are sitting stoically on the couch in matching pajamas? Or is it the one where you’re climbing over his shoulders, wearing sunglasses and pulling his hair?
What about pictures of your parents? Wedding photos are amazing and can reflect hilarious fashion trends, but so does that picture of your mom on the back of your dad’s motorcycle, sticking out her tongue in a skirt you can’t believe is that short!
And really, they don’t even need to be smiling. Some of the most stunning photos I’ve taken of children were caught in a moment where nothing was really going on. I think it’s especially beautiful to look back on how they looked during that “normal” moment in time.
How Pictures Affect Your Child’s Self-Esteem
Did you know that an easy way to lay a solid foundation for your child’s self-confidence is to put up pictures of them throughout your home? Seriously! Studies show that kids who see pictures of themselves regularly have higher self-esteem than those who don’t. And bonus points if you’re in the pictures with your children.
Psychologist and author David Krauss explains why this is so critical: "What it says to a child is, 'I'm important in this family.' It also shows a child he or she is meaningfully connected to others in the pictures.”
So now that you know how to take better pictures of your kids, when you’re ready for really cute pictures with them, shoot me a message! I’d love to photograph some memories that will bring your family joy for years to come.
What is a Lifestyle Photoshoot?
These pictures are organic, genuine, and intimate—and they tell a story about the real connection you feel as a family.
My goal for a Lifestyle Photoshoot is to capture you and your family—your personalities and your connection with each other—as naturally as possible. These pictures feel organic, genuine, and intimate. They will become a precious keepsake from a specific moment in time.
What Story Are You Telling?
The other day, my husband and I were in the car and I was browsing through some photos of our one-year-old daughter I’d taken recently on my phone. They were so pretty: crisp, clean, bright, and close up. I thought to myself how lucky she would be to have such picture-perfect images of herself as a baby when she’s my age.
But then I thought back to the photographs that fill the family albums my mom put together. The wide shots with clutter and brown living room carpet in the background; my overexposed, bald baby head; the occasional blurry thumb tip along the edge. Those pictures tell a story.
I told my husband that our baby may not know what her first living room looked like when she’s our age, because I purposely try to keep that out of the pictures. She won’t know what toys she had because I don’t take a picture inside the house unless everything is in its place and it looks like a West Elm catalogue. But what story am I telling?
Don’t get me wrong, I will always love stylized, crisp, clean photographs. I’m a perfectionist, so those images make my heart so happy! But I realized I need to be more intentional about capturing the way things really are.
The real story is that she grabs at her hair bows and pulls them right off, maintaining eye contact with me—as if to taunt me!—the entire time. She leaves a trail of toys and spilled milk behind her everywhere she goes. She fusses just as much as she smiles. Life is messy. And it’s beautiful.
If you’re like me and want to capture the real story, give a Lifestyle Shoot a try. This doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to tidy your house beforehand or that the pictures will be ugly! Technology has come a long way from the 80’s and I promise I won’t catch my thumb in the frame. I think you’ll see these pictures as a beautiful window into your real-life story.
What to Expect During a Lifestyle Photoshoot:
· Minimal posing: I want you guys to look as comfortable and in the moment as possible, so I’ll probably set you up within a space, give you minimal direction and let you take it from there. But don’t worry, if something appears unflattering, I’ll switch it up!
· A slow pace: It may seem like we are taking our time, because we are! We’ll book one hour for this session to allow plenty of moments to unfold.
· Natural lighting: For in-home sessions, we’ll hang out in rooms with lots of windows and natural light.
· Lots of laughter: Be prepared for tickle fights, dance parties and silly secrets, because these prompts often make for the sweetest photos.
Newborn Lifestyle Photoshoots
The reason this is the only style of photoshoot I offer for newborn photography is because it’s a way to document what those first few weeks actually look like. I don’t do much in the way of posing the baby. Each one brings something different to shoot. I let them lead!
A Newborn Lifestyle Photoshoot also takes the pressure off Mom, Dad, and Baby. No one is worried about that sweet baby getting chilly, and if a diaper needs changing, it doesn’t ruin the whole pose. We can be flexible and move at our own pace.
When to Book a Lifestyle Photoshoot
Here are some life events and occasions that make for the best Lifestyle Photoshoots:
· Newborn
· Adoption
· Birthday Parties
· Any Milestone Birthday
· New Home
· Summer/Outdoors
· New Pet/Aging Pet
Because these sessions are a bit longer, I only book them on weekend dates. I’d love to talk about your Lifestyle Photoshoot with you, so let’s lock in your date today!
What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session
Have you ever wondered what will look best on camera? Here are my tips on how to dress for your photo session!
I get asked about this all the time, so I decided to create a resource with some of my favorite examples. Here are my tips on how to dress for your family photo session.
You Want to Look Timeless, Not Twinning.
We’ve all seen the beach photos where everyone is wearing polos that are the exact same color. If that’s really your jam, I can work with that! However, pictures are more aesthetically pleasing and allow everyone’s personalities to shine through if you coordinate your outfits, not clone them.
Think About Where The Photos Will Be Displayed.
Here’s an idea a lot of people don’t think about: You want your family photos to look great in whatever space they’ll be displayed in. If you’re going to put them up in your modern living room full of neutrals, you probably don’t want everyone wearing hot pink.
Side note: We ran into this issue with pictures of our newborn daughter. When I went to choose which pictures to print on canvases for a gallery wall, I realized she was wearing pink or green and yellow (Go Pack Go!) in many of the photos. And my living room is very white, grey, and calm. I ended up re-shooting photos of her that wouldn’t disrupt the vibe and color scheme I’d already established.
So think about which rooms you plan to put them in, and use that to help inform your color choices. If your plans or paint color change, I can always get you black and white options—which goes with everything!
One Pattern For Every Two Solids.
I love it when families break up solid colors with tasteful patterns. If you do, I recommend having one person wearing a pattern for every two people wearing solid colors. This isn’t an exact formula, but the best-looking photos seem to have that type of mix. And remember, you can always mix and match solid colors on one person using layers: A vest, a scarf, a jacket, etc.
Consider Your Comfort.
The most important thing, of course, is that you feel most like yourself in what you’re wearing. For some people, posing for family photos is out of the ordinary and uncomfortable enough—so be sure your clothes don’t make you feel self-conscious.
I hope this helps, and I can’t wait to see you at our photo session!
